Gian Marco Contessa

Gian Marco Contessa is Senior Research Scientist at the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS), where he conducts research in the field of protection from ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. He is Member of the Collaborative Centre of the World Health Organization (WHO). From 2012 to 2023 he has been a Researcher at the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), where he has also been Radiation Protection Expert for the research centers of Casaccia and Frascati. Since 2020, he is Task leader of the Radiation Protection team of ENEA Sorgentina-RF project for the production of medical radioisotopes by means of fusion neutrons. He has a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and he is a Medical Physics Expert. Among others, he worked for ISPESL (now INAIL), ASL Roma “C”, the Department of Human Neurosciences of University “Sapienza” and the hospital San Pietro Fatebenefratelli. Currently, he is Member of the Board of Directors of the Interregional Professional Order of Chemists and Physicists (LUAM), of the Italian Association of Radiation Protection (AIRP) and of the Italian Federation for Radiation Research (FIRR), and he is adjunct Professor of applied physics at the Universities “Sapienza” and “Unicamillus” in Rome.
